WHKY: Gryphons Score Three Times on Power Play in 4-0 Road Win Over Laurier

WATERLOO, Ont. – Sunday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex, the Gryphons women's hockey team scored three power play goals in a 4-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks. Captain Kaitlin Lowy scored twice, while Valerie Lamenta made 18 saves for the shutout as the Gryphons improved to 3-3-0 on the season. With the loss, the Golden Hawks fall to 0-4-1.

The special teams came through Sunday night for the Gryphons, with the power play unit going 3-for-5 with the man advantage against Laurier. The first of those three power play goals would come early in the 2nd period when Kaitlin Lowy would bury a rebound for her 3rd goal of the season, with the marker coming just as the man advantage was winding down to give the visiting Gryphs a 1-0 lead.

Second year forward Molly Crossman would extend the lead to 2-0 with a quick release off a faceoff win beating Laurier goalie Cohen Myers five-hole to put the Gryphs up 2-0. It was Crossman's 1st goal of the season. It was not an overly busy night in net for Lamenta, who only faced 18 shots on net, but the Montreal native would come up with a stunning glove save late in the 2nd period to keep the lead at 2-0 for Guelph.

The Gryphons would put the game out of reach in the 3rd period with two more power play goals, both of which would come during a 5 minute major. Lowy would fire a shot just past Myers' glove-hand side for her second of the night, and team-leading 4th of the season. Less than three minutes later, Laura Crowdis would cap the scoring with her 2nd, as the Gryphons matched a season-high with four goals on the night.

The Gryphons will now return home for a Saturday afternoon (Nov. 11) game versus the Laurentian Voyageurs. Puck drop is set for 2pm at the Gryphon Centre Arena.
