ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Friday night in St. Catharines, the Gryphons women's volleyball team suffered a 3-sets-to-1 loss to Brock, in what was the Badgers' 2017-18 home opener. Set scores were 23-25, 25-17, 18-25, 23-25. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 0-3 on the season while the Badgers improve to 1-1.
After dropping a tight opening set (25-23), the Gryphons would respond with a strong performance in the 2nd set, winning 25-17 to level the match at a set apiece.
After Brock took the 3rd set, the Gryphons threatened to force a 5th after jumping out to a 16-10 lead in the 4th set. However, the Badgers would go on a 10-3 run following the technical timeout to get back into the set. After the Gryphons battled to tie the set at 23-23, Brock would seal the match with the final two points of the night.
"We had to improvise with our lineup a little bit tonight, but we still had our chances to win the match," said Gryphons head coach
Paul Funk. "We are still a little too up-and-down when it comes to our execution, and it's hard to close out sets when you're playing that way."
Gryphon rookie left side
Hazel Atkins (Vancouver, BC) led the team with 15 kills and 19 points. Second year left side
Logan Garrick racked up a team-high 6 service aces to go along with her 9 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore setter
Alex Curran recorded a team-high 15 digs to go along with 37 assists.
The Gryphons (0-3) will now return home to face the No. 7-ranked team in the country in the McMaster Marauders (1-1). Game time between the Gryphs and Marauders is set for 6pm on Saturday (Nov. 4) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
