WHKY: Gryphons Cap Off First Half with Decisive Win Over Western

GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre, the Gryphons women's hockey team matched a season-high by scoring five goals in a decisive 5-2 victory over the visiting Western Mustangs. Team captain Kaitlin Lowy scored twice and the Gryphons jumped out to a 5-0 lead midway through the 2nd period en route to an important three points in the standings. The Gryphons will now enter the exam/Christmas break with a record of 8-4-0, good for 3rd place in the 13-team OUA standings. With the loss, the Western Mustangs fall to 7-3-2 and sit one point behind Guelph at 4th place in the conference standings.

Fresh off an impressive 3-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday night, the Gryphons would once again get off to a good start on Saturday night thanks to a pair of quick goals midway through the opening period. Fourth year defenceman Meagan Lee would open the scoring with her first goal of the season, and second year forward Kristen Jay would extend the lead to 2-0 just 1:25 later to put the Gryphons in control early.

With just under five minutes remaining in the opening period, Kaitlin Lowy would cap off a dominant opening 20 minutes for the Gryphons by scoring her first of two goals on the night. Lowy ranks 2nd in the OUA in goals scored, next only to Western's April Wright, who accounted for both of the Mustangs' goals on Saturday night in Guelph. Lowy's second goal of the night would come just over a minute into the 2nd period to make it a 4-0 game.

Second year forward Molly Crossman would cap the Gryphon scoring with her second of the season coming midway through the 2nd period to make it 5-0 Guelph.

Gryphons' fourth year goalie Valerie Lamenta made 19 saves for her fifth win of the season, while third year forward Claire Merrick picked up a pair of assists and currently leads the OUA in assists (10) while ranking second in the conference in points (12).

The Gryphons enter the exam/Christmas break winners of seven of their last 10 games. The Gryphs will resume their OUA regular season on Wednesday, January 3 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-7-1).
