ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team has put together an impressive run. But a five-game winning streak, highlighted by dominant play at both ends of the rink, came to halt as the Gryphons fell 1-0 to the Brock Badgers Saturday afternoon in St. Catharines.
Guelph has played like a much more confident team during its hit stretch of play – they just weren't able to find a goal in a tight game against the talented Badgers and their solid goaltender Jensen Murphy. Brock's Kiana Tobia scored at 5:23 of the third period for the game-winner, while Murphy turned away all 30 shots the Gryphons sent her way for a well-earned shutout.
"Their goalie had another outstanding game," said Guelph head coach
Rachel Flanagan. "I thought we carried the play in the second and third periods but we couldn't capitalize on our chances."
Guelph had some plenty of chances, including a 6-on-4 power-play opportunity in the third period. The Gryphons' inability to get one past Jensen was costly as Tobia took full advantage of a Brock point shot that bounced strangely off of the boards and fell right to her. She buried it past
Valerie Lamenta, who saved 22 of 23 shots on the day.
Guelph almost equalized on a couple of occasions but a diving Murphy denied
Kelly Gribbons on a shorthanded rush and later in the period,
Meagan Lee rang a hard shot off the post.
The Gryphons are back in action Thursday, Nov. 23 when they host the Waterloo Warriors at 7:30 pm.
