KINGSTON, Ont. - Friday night in Kingston, the Gryphons women's volleyball team suffered a 3-sets-to-2 loss to the Queen's Gaels. Set scores were 25-11, 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, and 15-7. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 0-5 on the season while Queen's improves to 3-1.
After a disappointing opening set, the Gryphons would come to life, winning each of the next two sets. In the 2nd set, it was Gryphons' rookie right side Jessica Chung (London, ON) leading the way, showcasing an impressive serve as well as some timely defence to help the Gryphons jump out to a 9-1 lead. After taking the 2nd set 25-20, the Gryphons would continue to take it to the Gaels, winning a tight 3rd set 25-22. Unfortunatley for the Gryphs, the Gaels would were able to come out on top of a tight 4th set to force a decisive 5th set. In the final set, Queen's came out strong, scoring the first four points and eventually took an 8-1 lead into the technical timeout before ultimately closing out the match 15-7.
Jessica Gormley (11.5 points) and
Michaela Hellinga (10 kills) helped lead the way on the Gryphon attack, while second year setter Alex Curran racked up 29 assists and 11 digs. The Gryphons will be right back in action again on Saturday night in Kingston when they face RMC. Game time is set for 6pm.
