MVB: Gryphs Fall in Four Sets versus No. 2-ranked Marauders

GUELPH, ON - Saturday afternoon in a matchup of the top two teams in the OUA West Division, the Gryphons men's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the four-time defending OUA champion McMaster Marauders. Set scores were 22-25, 21-25, 25-22 & 18-25. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 6-3 on the season but remain alone in 2nd place in the OUA West. The Marauders, who are currently the No. 2-ranked team in Canada, remain undefeated at 7-0.

When the Gryphons and Marauders met in Hamilton back on October 28th in the season opener, the Gryphs gave the Marauders all they could handle in the opening set (which Mac ultimately won 27-25). On Saturday in Guelph, the Gryphs once again went toe-to-toe with the Marauders early on, as the two nationally ranked teams were tied at 11-11 and 14-14 in a hard fought opening set. Four consecutive points by the Marauders following the 14-14 tie would push their lead to 18-14 as they would hold on to take the opening set 25-22.

After Mac took the second set, the Gryphs would become just the second OUA team this season to claim a set off the Marauders (the only other team to take a set off Mac this season was Western during a 3-1 loss to Mac back on November 26). With the score knotted at 19-19 in the 3rd set, the Gryphs would reel off two big points on a kill by Josh Green and an ace by Zach Newman. The Gryphs would go on to take the 2nd set 25-22 but were unable to force a fifth after the Marauders closed out the match (18-25) in the 4th. Kendrick Kerr led the Gryphons with 17 points on the day (12 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) while Sam Kloke racked up 32 assists.

The Gryphons (6-3) have now lost back-to-back games, and will have to wait two weeks before getting their next chance to get back into the win column. The Gryphs are off this coming week, and will be back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host the York Lions. That match is the first of back-to-back home games for the Gryphons, who will also host the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Gryphons have eight games remaining on their regular season schedule, five of which will be played at the new Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
