GUELPH, ON – It's been five years since the Gryphon football team last lost two games in a row. After a hiccup in Windsor on Labour Day, the Gryphons will look to get back to their winning ways against the Queen's Gaels on Saturday. The Gryphons and Gaels kickoff at 1pm on Saturday, September 10 at Alumni Stadium.
Week 3 of the OUA season presents a new challenge for the Gryphons as their opponent this time around will be well rested following the Gaels bye week in Week 2. Queen's lost at Laurier to open up their regular season schedule but will now have two weeks of preparation for the Gryphons under their belts as they march into Alumni Stadium. In recent years, homefield advantage has been a huge factor in this head-to-head series with the home team winning in each of the past eight matchups. The last time Queen's came to Guelph was for the Gryphons 2014 Homecoming game in which the Gryphons rolled 66-0. In 2015, the Gaels got some bragging rights back as they were the only team in the OUA to beat the eventual Yates Cup Champion Gryphons thanks to a 23-15 victory over Guelph in Kingston.
The Gaels were victorious over Guelph last season thanks in large part to a 108-yard touchdown completion from Queen's quarterback Nate Hobbs to receiver Matteo Del Brocco. Both of those players return in 2016, with Hobbs now entering his third season in the OUA. The Gaels lost some key pieces on offence in the offseason with running back Jesse Andrews and star receiver Doug Corby both moving on. While Corby will be difficult to replace in the receiving core, the Gaels have a very capable running back who has taken over the No. 1 role in Jonah Pataki.
Defensively, the Gaels boast a very big, physical secondary which could create some challenges for the Gryphons youthful receiving core. Linebacker Nelkas Kwemo and defensive end Zac Sauer headline the Gaels front seven who will look to disrupt the rhythm of James Roberts and the Gryphon offensive attack.
Saturday's game will be one that has been circled on the calendar for some time for Gryphons defensive lineman Corey Flude. Flude transferred from the Gaels and has earned a starting spot with the Gryphons in this his first season in the red, black and gold.
For those unable to make it to Alumni Stadium on Saturday, the game will be televised live on Rogers TV Cable 20 for viewers in the Guelph area. Viewers anywhere can tune in live online at
