MSCR: Gryphons Home Opener Ends in 0-0 Draw versus McMaster

GUELPH, ON – A very physical, emotional affair Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex saw the Gryphons men's soccer team play to a 0-0 draw versus the McMaster Maruaders in what was the Gryphons OUA regular season home opener. With the result, the Gryphons now sit at 1-0-1 (wins-losses-draws) on the season, while McMaster now sits at 2-0-1.

It was a game which saw 11 yellow cards handed out between the two sides, with a McMaster player sent off in stoppage time after receiving his second yellow. The Gryphons had several solid scoring opportunities in the match, most coming in the second half, but were unable to open the scoring.

Gryphons fourth year keeper Ben Caranci (Richmond Hill, ON) had a terrific game, making several crucial saves throughout the match, including a big stop during a partial breakaway in the second half. Caranci now has recorded a pair of clean sheets through the first two games of the season after helping the Gryphons to a 4-0 win in their regular season opener last Saturday at Laurier.

After the match, U of G head coach Keith Mason commeted on his fourth year keeper saying, "He (Ben Caranci) stepped up to the occasion and has really improved from last year. He made a couple huge saves for us today and really came through for us when we needed him to. Just an excellent game for Ben tonight."

The Gryphons played this game without the services of their fifth year team captain Justin Springer. Springer just recently returned from making his international debut with his native country St. Kitts and Nevis. The centre back picked up his first international cap during an international friendly versus Nicaragua that also ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Gryphons will look to stay unbeaten to start their season after taking four points in their first two games as they are in Waterloo on Sunday to take on the Warriors.
