OTTAWA, ON – Saturday night in Ottawa the Gryphons men's hockey team lost 4-1 to the Carleton Ravens in the OUA Bronze Medal game. With the result, the Gryphons 2015-16 season officially comes to an end while the Ravens advance to the CIS Championships next week in Halifax.
During the regular season, the Gryphons and Ravens met just once, with Guelph winning 2-0 on the road. After throwing 33 shots at
Andrew D'Agostini in that previous meeting and not once finding the back of the net, the Ravens suddenly found themselves leading 2-0 over Guelph on Saturday night thanks to a pair of goals coming on each of their first two shots of the night. After Clark Veenstra opened the scoring for Carleton, Brett Gustavsen would double it by scoring a goal that the Gryphons felt should not have stood. With plenty of traffic in front of D'Agostini, it would be Gustavsen who was credited with the tip-in on a goal that the Gryphons argued was only possible due to goalie interference. The goal would stand however, and the Carleton lead would grow to 3-0 before the end of the period as Carleton's Mitch Zion capped the first period scoring with a perfectly placed shot during a Ravens power play. The three first period goals from the Ravens came on just six shots as it was Guelph who actually outshot Carleton 16-6 in the opening period.
Despite the fact that he allowed three goals in the opening period of play, Gryphons second year goalie Andrew D'Agostini was absolutely sensational in the second period, making one big save after another, doing his best to keep the deficit at 3-0. Just over three minutes into the second, D'Agostini made a pair of incredible saves one after the other. Moments later, the Gryphons would find the back of the net at the other end with defenceman
Sean Robertson (Victoria, BC) scoring his first of the playoffs.
Dylan Gilbert and
Seth Swenson picked up assists on the power play marker that made it a 3-1 game. It would prove to be the only goal of the second period as the Gryphons, who were outshot 17-5 in the period, trailed by just two heading to the third.
In the third, the Ravens were able to push their lead back to three thanks to a power play goal from Ryan Van Stralen. The Gryphons would be unable to generate any more offence the rest of the way as Carleton would skate to the 4-1 victory and book a spot in the University Cup next week in Halifax. Andrew D'Agostini made 28 saves as the Gryphons were outshot 31-29 on the night. The banged up Gryphons played this game without the services of forwards Carlos Amestoy, Tryg Strand, Lenny Fabbri and Rob Lepine, all of whom missed the game due to injury. Defenceman Thomas Kohler also did not suit up, while team leading scorer Rob De Fulviis dressed, but was unable to finish the game.
