WVB: Gryphons pick up crucial win over Warriors

GUELPH, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team scored a crucial 3-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Center. Set scores were 25-13, 20-25, 25-18 & 25-17. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 7-9 while the Warriors fall to 4-11.

The first set saw the Gryphons jump out to an early lead at 8-3 and lead 16-12 at the technical timeout. From there, they expanded the lead later to win comfortably at 25-13. Set 2 saw a reversal of fortunes as Waterloo led 8-4 early on. They expanded the lead later to lead 19-13 and were able to cruise to a 25-20 win. The third set had Guelph leading early at 5-1 but Waterloo battled back to tie it at 11 all. The Gryphons were better down the stretch though and forged ahead to a 25-18 win. Set 4 had the Gryphons leading throughout as Waterloo could get no closer than 4 points and Guelph wrapped up the match at 25-17.

Coach Funk said, "This was a huge win for us in terms of playoff chances. The match seemed to turn in our favor in the middle of the third set as we battled to take control and then played steadily the rest of the way." Jessica Gormley (9 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks) and Becky Breau (9 kills, 3 aces, 1 block) led the Guelph offense with 13 points each while Kristen Almhjell was stellar defensively with 27 digs. The Gryphons next action will be next Friday, Feb. 12 at 6pm with Senior Night and will also double as the final home volleyball match in the West Gym as the team will play their home matches next year in the brand new Mitchell Center expansion.
