KINGSTON, ON - It's not very often that the Gryphons women's basketball team is outworked in the rebounding column, but such was the case Friday night in Kingston where the Gryphons lost 75-61 to the Gaels. Queen's out-rebounded Guelph 51-26 on the night. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 6-6 on the season while the Gaels improve to 10-3.
With fifth year forward
Kate MacTavish roaming the paint for the Gryphons, Guelph fans have become accustomed to the fact that the best rebounder on the floor is usually wearing No. 23 in black, red and gold. However, on Friday night, Gryphon fans got a glimpse of another one of the top rebounders in the league in Gaels' fourth year forward Robyn Pearson. The 6-0 Toronto native entered the game as the country's leading rebounder and looked the part, racking up 20 points and 15 rebounds in the victory. MacTavish also recorded a double double (11 points, 10 rebounds) but was just 4-of-18 from the floor.
While the Gryphons may have lost the rebouding battle, they did receive some nice play from the guard position. Gryphons second year point guard
Bridget Atkinson poured in a team-high 16 points to go along with 7 assists and three rebounds. Senior
Kate Yallin and rookie
Abbey Clark also combined to come off the bench and hit three of the Gryphons five three pointers on the night.
The Gryphons are right back at it on Saturday night at York University where they will face the 2-11 Lions. The Gryphons are currently sitting in a playoff position at third in the OUA Central division, but own a slim two point lead over fourth place Lakehead with seven games still remaining on the regular season schedule.
