KINGSTON, ON - Friday night in Kingston, the Gryphons men's basketball team lost 93-81 to the Queen's Gaels. Over the final three quarters of play, the Gryphons outscored the Gaels 64-57. Unfortunately, the Gryphons dug themselves a hole by allowing Queen's to score 36 points in the opening quarter before holding on for a 12-point victory. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 5-7 while the Gaels improve to 8-5.
After a solid defensive effort in their previous game against Algoma, the Gryphons came out flat Friday night as the Gaels shot 76.2% from the field (16-21) in the opening quarter, and took a commanding 36-17 lead to the second quarter. The Gryphon defence would tighten up in the second quarter, holding Queen's to 7-of-20 shooting in the frame, but still trailed by 21 at the break.
Guelph would dominate the third quarter, outscoring Queen's 27-15 to trim the deficit to single digits heading to the final quarter of play.
Ahmed Haroon led the way for the Gryphons in that third quarter, pouring in 11 of his team-high 17 points in the third. The Gryphons continued to show great resolve to fight their way back into the game, and after a pair of Andrew Grant free throws in the fourth quarter, found themselves down just five points with the score now 69-64. However, that was as close as the Gryphons would get as Queen's would end any hopes of a comeback by answering with a 19-6 run.
Gryphons third year guard
Jonathan Wallace filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 13 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Other Gryphons to score in double figures were
Daniel Dooley (13 points) and
Taylor Boers (11 points). The Gaels were led by fourth year guard
Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto, ON) who led all scorers with 24 points.
The Gryphons now sit four points back of Lakehead for the third and final playoff spot in the OUA Central division, with seven games still remaining on the regular season schedule. The Gryphons are right back in action once again on Saturday at York University. Tip off versus the Lions (3-10) is scheduled for 8pm.
