WBB: Atkinson scores career-high 24 as Gryphons win 71-62 over Laurier

WATERLOO, ON – Friday night at Wilfrid Laurier University, the Gryphons women's basketball team won 71-62 over the Golden Hawks thanks to a career-high 24 points from second year point guard Bridget Atkinson. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 8-6 on the season while Laurier falls to 7-9.

If you're going to beat the Golden Hawks, you're going to have to find a way to limit the damage they do from three point range. When it comes down to connecting from beyond the arc, the Golden Hawks have attempted (377) and hit (110) more three pointers than any other team in the OUA. Friday night on their home court however, the Hawks struggled from the outside thanks to some great perimeter defence from the Gryphons. Laurier finished the game just 4-of-22 from downtown (18.2%) and were held to single digits in scoring in the second quarter in which they were outscored 19-8 by the Gryphons. Guelph took an eight point lead into the locker room at the half.

In the second half, fourth year forward Katelyn Yallin would come off the bench and go 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, accounting for all of her team's made 3's on the night. Yallin's 12 points off the bench were a nice spark, but the spotlight on Friday belonged to sophomore point guard Bridget Atkinson. The Welland, Ontario native was an efficient 10-18 from the floor while pouring in a career-high 24 points. Atkinson also added 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in the latest in a string of impressive performances that helped the Gryphons win for the third time in their last four games.

The Gryphons also outrebounded Laurier 50-38 on the night, led by Kate MacTavish who had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with 10 points.

The Gryphons will be right back in action Saturday night when they travel to the University of Waterloo to take on the Warriors (4-11).
