GUELPH, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team finished off their first half schedule with an important 3-0 home win against the Waterloo Warriors Friday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20 & 25-19. In the first set, a 9-1 Guelph run on either half of the technical timeout was the difference as they took the set 25-16. In set 2, the Gryphons jumped out to an early lead and were ahead 16-8 at the technical timeout. Waterloo chipped away at the lead later in the set but could get no closer than 3 points as Guelph won the set 25-20. The third set saw the Gryphons ahead early again and a 7-3 run midway in the set was the difference again as Guelph closed out the match with a 25-19 win.
Gryphosn head coach Paul Funk stated, "This was another big win for us as it puts us solidly in the race for a playoff spot going into the second half. We played steady for the second match in a row and we won the serve and serve receive battle which gave us the advantage. It was a good way to finish off the first half." Victoria Golebiowski led the Gryphon offence with 12 points (11 kills, 1 ace) followed by Jessica Gormley with 9 (6 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) while Kayla McMullen had 9 digs on the defensive side. Guelph finishes the first half with a 4-4 record, good for 3rd place in the OUA West Division. The Gryphons return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 12 noon as they play their first match in the brand new Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
