MVB: Gryphons Sweep Weekend Road Trip with Win Saturday Over Lancers

WINDSOR, ON – One night after winning in straight sets in London, the Gryphons men's volleyball team were once again back in action, this time in Windsor taking on the Lancers. And for a second straight night, the Gryphons were clicking on all cylinders, picking up a 3-1 over the Lancers. Set scores were 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 & 25-16. With the result, the Gryphons improve to 2-1 on the season while Windsor falls to 0-2.

After a slow start to the match, with Windsor taking the opening set 25-19, the Gryphons would start to take over, with third year Libero Kaj Wigston (Guelph, ON) leading the way defensively. Wigston, the Gryphons digging specialist, was able to not only help out defensively, but also contributed with some solid set distribution as well. The Gryphons were able to take the second set 25-19 to even things up at a set apiece.

The third set saw the Gryphons trailing for the majority of the set, before pulling out some key points late to steal the set 25-23. Zach Newman and Josh Green both stepped up for the Gryphons on Saturday in Windsor, finishing with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

In the fourth set, the Gryphons ran away with things and never let the Lancers get back into it, cruising to a 25-16 set win to seal the match.

Saturday night's match versus the Lancers signaled the Gryphons most impressive offensive performance of the young season. The Gryphons hitting numbers were off the charts with the team hitting at .400 or better in three of the four sets.

A trio of Gryphons scored in double figures with Zach Newman (18 pts), Josh Green (11 pts) and Kendrick Kerr (10 pts) all playing key roles in the Gryphon attack.

Up next for the Gryphons, a day-trip to the University of Waterloo on Thursday, November 10 to face the perennial power Warriors. Game time is set for 11am. After that, the Gryphons will return to U of G for their home opener on Friday, November 18 versus RMC.
