WHKY: Lakers Edge Gryphons in Matchup of Top Two Teams in OUA

NORTH BAY, ON - Friday in North Bay the Gryphons women's hockey team lost 1-0 versus the Nipissing Lakers. The lone goal of the game came from Nipissing's Jade Gauthier with 6:40 remaining in the third period. With the win, Nipissing improves to 9-1-0 while the Gryphons fall to 8-2-1.

In what was one of the most anticipated games of the 2016-17 OUA regular season to this point, the Gryphons arrived in North Bay winners of six straight and ranked No. 4 in the country. The Nipissing Lakers meanwhile, rode a five-game win streak into Friday night's matchup and entered the night as the No. 8-ranked team in the national polls.

The Gryphons, who were shutout for just the second time this season, were unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 opportunity, and also failed to convert on a breakaway in the second period when Kelly Gribbons fired just high. The Gryphons were outshot 26-16 on the night, with U of G goalie Val Lamenta making 25 saves on the night.

The Gryphons will look to get back in the win column on Saturday (3:50pm) when they travel to Sudbury to face the Laurentian Voyageurs.
