GUELPH, ON - Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons men's soccer team scored a season-high nine goals en route to an emphatic 9-0 win over the visiting Waterloo Warriors. With the win, the No. 8-ranked Gryphons improve to 9-1-2 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 2-9-1.
A total of seven different Gryphon players found the back of the net, with rookies
Alex Zis and
Mitchell Lefebvre each scoring a pair. Second year striker
Jace Kotsopoulos opened the scoring in the 6th minute and now is the OUA's leading scorer with 12 goals on the season. The Gryphons built up a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play after goals from
Conor O'Callaghan and
Tomasz Skublak, and took a 5-0 lead into the half after
Justin Springer and Alex Zis put their names on the score sheet.
The Gryphons would go on to add four more goals in the second half and currently hold the title as the highest scoring team in the country. Through 12 games played, the Gryphons have scored a CIS-best 45 goals, six more than the defending OUA and CIS champion York Lions.
The Gryphons and Lions will square off on Wednesday, October 12 at York. The two teams combined for a terrific contest when they met earlier this season, a game that was won by York on a free kick in stoppage time.Â
Kickoff between the No. 8-ranked Gryphons and No. 1-ranked Lions is set for 8:15pm.
