MRGBY: Gryphons Still Undefeated After Dramatic Win Over Western

LONDON, ON - Friday afternoon in London, the Gryphons men's rugby team picked up a dramatic 22-18 win over the Western Mustangs. Jeremy Wright's try on the last play of the game allowed the Gryphosn to remain as the only undefeated team in the OUA with a 6-0 record with two games remaining in the regular season schedule. The Mustangs meanwhile fall to 3-2-1 on the season.

Coming into this contest, the Gryphons had been rolling over opponents. Over their previous three games prior to the matchup with Western, the Gryphons outscored their opponents 207 to 8 with wins over Brock, Toronto and Laurier. Friday's trip to London however was always going to be a tougher test against a solid Western team who were able to open the scoring and get the Gryphons.

The Gryphons were able to respond with a try from Ryan Brethour and after exchanging penalty goals, the Gryphons and Mustangs were tied at 8-8 at the half.

In the second half, Western once again was able to jump in front and built up a 15-8 lead before the Gryphons responded with a try from winger Andrew Douglas on a long run help tie the match at 15-15.

Western kicked a penalty late to take an 18-15 lead and appeared to be headed towards handing the Gryphons their first loss of the season. However, Jack Caylor took a quick tap and helped move the Gryphons down within the 5-metre line, allowing the U of G forwards to go to work from there. With the game now late in injury time, it was OUA All-Star Jeremy Wright eventually touching the ball down beneath a pile as time expired to give the Gryphons a thrilling victory.

The Gryphons will next be in action on Friday, October 14 when they host the Waterloo Warriors (0-6) at 8pm on Varsity Field.
