GUELPH, ON - The Gryphons men's soccer team swept the weekend series versus Algoma with wins over the Thunderbirds on both Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 1 & 2). With the wins, the Gryphons now boast a record of 7-1-2 (wins-losses-draws) on the season. With the two losses, Algoma remains winless and falls to 0-11-1.
Game 1 (Saturday, Oct. 1): W 6-0

Following an impressive road trip that saw them pick up wins at both Western and Windsor, the Gryphons returned home on the weekend for a pair of home games against the Algoma Thunderbirds. In Game 1 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium, the Gryphons grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on a goal from second year striker
Jace Kotsopoulos. For Kotsopoulos, it was the start of what would be a big weekend as the Burlington native would go on to score a hat trick in the Gryphons 6-0 win over Algoma on Saturday.
Other goal scorers for the Gryphons on Saturday were
Chris Jacovou, with a pair, as well as
Willem Grant. For Grant, a third year midfielder, it was his first goal of the season. Jacovou meanwhile sits third on the team in scoring with five goals on the year.
Ben Caranci and
Simon Norgrove split goaltending duties to combine for the clean sheet.
Prior to the game, the Gryphons honoured former men's soccer player
Pat Dugas who passed away suddenly in April of 2016. Pat played varsity soccer at U of G from 1990-1994 and was a member of the Gryphons 1990 OUAA championship and CIAU silver medalist squad. A commemorative jersey in Pat's honour was presented pre-game with several of his former teammates and family members in attendance for the ceremony.

Game 2Â Recap:
On Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) the Gryphons and Thunderbirds shifted venues on campus and squared off at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Gryphons were once again able to pick up a convincing victory, this time by a final score of 8-0. For a second straight day, forward Jace Kotsopoulos recorded a hat trick, giving him a team-high 10 goals on the season, ranking him 2nd amongst OUA scoring leaders. Kotsopoulos completed the hat trick in the first half with goals in the 28th, 32nd and 44th minutes of play.
Tomasz Skublak continued his impressive 2016 season with a pair of goals himself, giving him seven goals on the season. Skublak currently ranks fifth in the OUA in scoring. Chris Jacovou and
Naseem Sweeney rounded out the scoring for the Gryphons in the 8-0 win.
Up next for the Gryphons, a matchup with the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-4-1) on Wednesday, October 5th. Kickoff is set for 12:30pm at Alumni Stadium.
