HAMILTON, ON - The Guelph Gryphons men's volleyball team opened their 2016-17 regular season Friday night in Hamilton, losing in straight sets against the No. 3-ranked McMaster Marauders. Set scores were 25-27, 12-25 and 11-25.
When it comes to OUA men's volleyball, there is no tougher road game than a trip to Burridge Gymnasium, home of the defending OUA champion and CIS silver medalist Marauders. Last season, McMaster posted an 18-2 record during the regular season and lost only 11 sets total during those 20 games. In the opening set of the 2016-17 campaign, the Gryphons showed that they have the ability to play with the top programs in the country pushing McMaster to the limits before falling just short and dropping the opening set 25-27.
The Marauders would pull away in the second and third sets to win in straight sets.
The Gryphons leading scorer was fourth year left side
Josh Green who finished with a team-high 6 kills.
Kendrick Kerr and
Jared Harris each finished with 5.5 points. The Marauders recorded 11 service aces compared to four for the Gryphons.
The Gryphons will next be in action next Friday (Nov. 4) when they travel to London to face the Mustangs. Guelph is opening the season with four straight road games before returning home on November 18 to host RMC.
