GUELPH, ON - Friday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre, the Gryphons men's basketball team capped off the preseason portion of their schedule by winning 79-75 over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Gryphons were able to get off to a quick start, outscoring Laurentian 22-11 and holding the Voyageurs to just 3-of-14 shooting in the opening quarter. The Gryphons led by 12 after two quarters of play and knocked down 7 three pointers in the opening half. Fourth year guard
Taylor Boers finished with a team-high 16 points off the bench and scored 10 of his 16 in the third quarter as the Gryphons led by 16 heading to the fourth.
Laurentian would make a run late but were unable to complete the comeback as the Gryphons would hold on for the four point win despite being outscored 23-11 in the final quarter. Rookie
Aaron Nugent scored 10 points and was 2-2 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Gryphons shot 40% from three (10-25). In total, 15 different players saw floor time for the Gryphons.
The Gryphons will now prepare for their OUA regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 5th when they travelt to London to face the Mustangs. Guelph's home opener is set for Saturday, Nov. 12th versus Queen's at the W.F. Mitchell Centre.
