GUELPH, ON – In a game with playoff implications in the OUA West, the Guelph Gryphons and Windsor Lancers played to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. The result sees the Gryphons finish third in the OUA West with 32 points with a 9-2-5 record. Guelph will host a first round playoff game on Wednesday night against Laurier.
The best chance of the match came from
Samantha Taylor of the Gryphons with less than 10 minutes left. Taylor unleashed a rocket from the right hash mark from well out, but the long distance strike sailed just over the crossbar.
The Gryphons were buzzing around the net the entire match especially early on. The Gryphon attack was spearheaded by rookie striker
Victoria Hinchliffe who helped create several great scoring chances, none of which the Gryphons were able to turn into goals thanks in part to a strong performance from Windsor goalkeeper Krystin Lawrence.
Gryphons goalkeeper
Libby Brenneman continues to lead the country in shutouts after recording her 10th clean sheet of the season on Sunday afternoon.
A win over Windsor on Sunday would have clinched a second place finish in their division and a first round bye for the Gryphons. Instead, the Gryphs finish third in the OUA West and will now get set to host sixth place Laurier in the opening round of OUA playoffs on Wednesday night (Oct. 26) at 7pm at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Gryphons, who will enter the postseason undefeated in their last eight games, took four out of a possible six points from Laurier during their two regular season meetings, tying 2-2 in the season opener and winning 1-0 back on October 5th.
