AJAX, ON - After the Gryphons had built up a 6-1 lead in the 5th inning, the Brock Badgers stormed back with six runs over the final five innings of play to pull off a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Gryphons in what was the opening game of the 2016 OUA Championship tournament for both teams. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Gryphons still have life as the OUA Championship tournament is a double knockout format. Guelph will face the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday morning at 10am.
The Brock Badgers posted a 14-4 record during the regular season and won both of their head-to-head matchups with Guelph during the regular season. However, Friday afternoon, the Gryphons were able to jump out to an early lead with three runs in the 3rd inning coming off of a
Joe Ciccia two-run double and a
Nick Interisano RBI single. The Gryphons would add three more runs in the top of the 5th, capped by a RBI single from
Matt Allen which gave the Gryphons a 6-1 lead.Â
But after the Badgers scored one in the 5th and two in the 6th, they would complete the comeback with a three-run home run by Badgers first baseman Blake Stepien in the bottom of the 8th. Stepien finished the game with four RBI's.
