MVB: Mustangs pull away from Gryphons in London

LONDON, ON – Friday night at Alumni Hall on the campus of Western University, the Gryphons men's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Mustangs. Set scores were 24-26, 26-24, 23-25 & 17-25. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 4-9 on the season while Western improves to 7-6.

After an evenly fought battle in their first meeting back in October, the Gryphons and Mustangs met up for the second time this season and picked up right where they left off with some tightly contested sets. After Western was able to take the opening set 24-26, the Gryphons would bounce back with an impressive effort in the second set. With the set tied at 23-23, the Gryphons would take the lead on an emphatic kill by Zach Newman. Newman's ensuing net serve caught the Mustangs off guard as the Gryphons evened the match at a set apiece.

The Gryphons continued to roll early on in the third set as they built up an early 10-4 lead. Unfortunately for the Gryphs, things would start to unravel from there as the Mustangs were able to mount a comeback and take the third set 23-25. Guelph was never able to recover from that letdown as Western would go on to take the fourth set 17-25 and the match 3-sets-to-1.

Newman led the way for the Gryphons with 19 points, followed by Josh Green with 11.5. Luke Woud chipped in with 8.5 points to go along with a team-high 3 block assists.

The Gryphons will be right back in action again on Saturday night in Windsor when they take on the Lancers (3-11) at 8pm.
