WHKY: Gryphons win 3-2 over UOIT

OSHAWA, ON - If you were to just look at the OUA standings - this one was a mismatch. On the ice however, it was about as tight as it gets. On Sunday afternoon the first place Gryphon Women's Hockey team travelled to Oshawa to take on the 12th place UOIT Ridgebacks. After falling behind 1-0, the Gryphons would score three unanswered goals and eventually held on to win 3-2. With the victory, the Gryphons improve to 14-2-1 while UOIT falls to 5-10-1.

In the opening period, UOIT took a 1-0 lead. Twice. After a scramble in front of the Guelph net, the Ridgebacks players threw their hands in the air after what appeared to be the game's first goal. However, after a quick meeting from the officials, it was determined that the puck had not crossed the goaline. The game was still scoreless. But not for long. On the ensuing faceoff, a point shot found from UOIT's Jenna Carter found its way through a crowd and into the back of the net. The Ridgebacks, who came into the game second-last in the OUA standings, held a 1-0 lead on the No. 1 team in the country. That seemed to wake up the Gryphons.

Just 29 seconds after the UOIT goal, the Gryphons would answer with a goal of their own. Mackenzie Wong scored her 2nd goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the period, the Gryphons would take the lead when Leigh Shilton sent a slow knuckler towards the Ridgeback net, which completely fooled UOIT goalie Cassie Charette as the Gryphons took a 2-1 lead to the 2nd period.

Early in the second, Sophie Contant pushed the Gryphon lead to 3-1 with a one-timer from the slot, her second goal in her last three games. To UOIT's credit, they would continue to put up a tough fight despite the three straight U of G goals. With under five minutes to go in the 2nd period, the Ridgebacks were able to take advantage of a Guelph turnover as Nicole Gorda sent a wrist shot high blocker side beating Stephanie Nehring and making it a 3-2 game. From that point on however, the Gryphons defence would tighten as the 3rd period was a scoreless affair, allowing the Gryphons to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

The Gryphons outshot the Ridgebacks 32-20 in the game. The game marked the second of five consecutive road games for the Gryphs who will next be in action on Saturday, January 23 when they travel to Toronto to face the last place Ryerson Rams (2-11-1).
