WSCR: Whiteside's Stunning Goal Still Not Enough as Gryphons Fall to No. 4 Laurier

Box Score
Guelph, ON - Tuesday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons Women's Soccer team lost 2-1 against the Laurier Golden Hawks. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 4-3-0 while the Golden Hawks improve to 6-0-1. Laurier came into Tuesday afternoon's game as the No. 4-ranked team in the CIS. In the 26th minute, the Golden Hawks would take the lead thanks to their fifth year All-Canadian striker Emily Brown (Waterloo, ON). Fortunately for the Gryphons, they would be able to respond with a fifth year standout of their own. Courtney Whiteside's brilliant goal in the 69th minute tied the game at 1-1. With her back to goal, Whiteside was able to take one touch with her knee, before spinning and half-volleying home a gorgeous strike to bring the Gryphons back to level terms. Unfortunately for the Gryphons, the match would not stay that way for long. Less than two minutes later, the Golden Hawks would re-take the lead on a goal from Maxine Murchie in the 70th minute. That would prove to be the difference as Laurier would escape with the 2-1 victory. The Gryphons will have a good opportunity to get back in the win column this weekend when they travel to Sault Ste. Marie to face Algoma on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 26-27).
