Box Score Calgary, AB – Sunday afternoon in Calgary the Gryphons women's hockey team won 4-1 over l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (Moncton Blue Eagles) in the 5
th Place Game of the 2015 CIS Women's hockey championships. The Gryphons finish the tournament with a 2-1 record in what was their first trip to nationals in 15 years.
The Gryphons final game of the tournament started out a lot like their first; with the Gryphons scoring the first three goals of the game. Midway through the first period,
Leigh Shilton (Belleville, ON) would continue her red hot play by scoring her third goal of the CIS championships to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. Just 57 seconds later, the Gryphons would strike again.
Katie Mora (Guelph, ON) was sent in alone and denied, but the Gryphons would have a few more cracks at the rebound and eventually it would be
Brittany St. James (Orono, ON) finding the back of the net to give Guelph a 2-0 lead on the AUS finalists. Still in the second period, the Gryphons would look to add to their lead as
Kelly Gribbons (Port Elgin, ON) would end a great shift by potting her first of the CIS Championships and third of the postseason as the Gryphons stormed out to a 3-0 lead. The flood gates were officially opened when Shilton would score again just 26 seconds after Gribbons. For Shilton, it marked the second straight two-goal game as Guelph held a commanding 4-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes of play.
The four goal, first period outburst would be more than enough for the Gryphons as they would never allow Moncton to seriously threaten the lead.
Rachel Cassidy (London, ON) was named the Player of the Game for Guelph while
Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) capped off an impressive week by turning away 21 of the 22 shots sent her way as the Gryphons, for the first time in school history, finished with a winning record at the CIS Championships.
