MBB: Tale of two halves as Gryphons lose on road to No. 3 Ryerson

Box Score
Toronto, ON – After an impressive first half that saw the Gryphons take a four point lead into the locker room, the Ryerson Rams would outscore Guelph 41-18 in the second half to win 82-63.  With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 7-7 while the Rams improve to 14-2.

For the opening 20 minutes, the Gryphons were not just hanging with one of the top teams in the country, they were taking it to them.  Thanks in part to some lights out shooting, the Gryphons were able to pour in 27 points in the second quarter.  As a team, the Gryphs shot 57% from the field in the opening half, led by second year guard Taylor Boers (Belleville, ON) who came off the bench to score 14 points in the half on a perfect five of five shooting.  With seemingly everything falling, the Gryphons went six for nine from beyond through the first two quarters, with Boers going three for three from downtown, and held a 45-41 lead at the break.

When the second half rolled around, the Gryphons came back down to earth offensively, and the Ryerson Rams started to play like one of the top teams in the country.  The Rams would dominate the third quarter, outscoring the Gryphons 25-10. Ryerson forward Kadeem Green led all scorers with 19 points while Jahmal Jones had 15.  Ryerson would outscore Guelph 41-18 in the second half en route to an 82-63 victory.

It was a tale of two halves for the Gryphons.  After going six of nine from beyond in the first half, they would go two of 17 from three point land in the second half.  Taylor Boers was held scoreless the rest of the night after pouring in 14 points in the opening two quarters, but still finished as the Gryphons leading scorer.  Daniel Dooley had 11 points, Adam Kemp had 10.

The Gryphons (7-7) remain in the thick of the playoff hunt with five games remaining on their regular season schedule.  Up next, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 8pm.
