Thunder Bay, ON - Friday night in Thunder Bay the Gryphons Women's Basketball team won 65-53 over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in what was the OUA Regular Season opener for both teams. Kate MacTavish and Dana Van Balkom were the Gryphons two players to score in double digits with 13 and 12 points respectively. The Gryphons held Lakehead to just 32% shooting on the night and limited them to just 9 points in the final quarter.

The Gryphons started their 2015 season off in impressive fashion, building up a 15-point lead at the half. Lakehead was able to trim the deficit to five heading to the fourth, but a strong defensive effort by the Gryphons in the final quarter would ensure the team's lead would not slip away. Fifth year senior Kate MacTavish was an efficient 6-of-9 from the field and had a nice all-around game with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. The Gryphons bench outscored Lakehead's bench 16-4, with 8 of those 16 points coming from rookie Abbey Clark. In her first OUA regular season game, Clark saw 18 minutes of floor time and was a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. She also hauled in 3 rebounds. The Gryphons shot 44% from the floor as a team and out-rebounded Lakehead 33-26 in the game.
