MSCR: Gryphons Close Out Regular Season with 4-2 Win Over McMaster

Box Score
Hamilton, ON - Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, the Gryphons Men's Soccer team won 4-2 over the McMaster Marauders. With the win, the Gryphons finish the regular season with a 9-5-2 record, good for 4th in the OUA West Division. With the loss, McMaster falls to 11-5-0 on the season, putting them 3rd in the OUA West.

After McMaster jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Gryphons were able to equalize in the 23rd minute thanks to standout rookie striker Jace Kotsopoulos. The Burlington native tied that game at 1-1 with his team-leading 11th goal of the season. The 11 goals from Kotsopoulos rank him 2nd in the OUA and 9th in the country amongst top goal scorers. McMaster would answer back to take a 2-1 lead into the half. But the final 45 minutes was all Gryphons.

In the 59th minute, the Gryphons tied the game at 2-2 on a goal from rookie midfielder Chris Jacovou. Second year winger Jalen Noronha (Wellesley, ON) put the Gryphons ahead in the 67th minute with his third goal in his last five games, and the three goal second half would be capped by Jacovou's second goal of the match and fifth of the season in the 89th minute to secure the three points.

The Gryphons now move on to the OUA playoffs as a No. 4 seed in the OUA West. The Gryphons will host fifth-seeded Western (4-7-5) on Wednesday, October 28 at 7pm at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Gryphons failed to pick up a win against the Mustangs in their two regular season meetings, tying 2-2 on Labour Day in London and losing 2-0 at home on October 14. However, the Gryphons enter the playoffs with plenty of confidence having won four of their last five matches, with all four of those wins coming against playoff teams (Windsor, Laurier and McMaster twice).
