MSCR: Gryphons Lose 2-0 to Western

Box Score
Guelph, ON - Wednesday night (Oct. 14) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons Men's Soccer team lost 2-0 to the visiting Western Mustangs. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 6-5-2 on the season with three games remaining on the regular season schedule. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 4-6-4.

Western's fourth-year striker Christian Douglas (Oakville, ON) scored what would prove to be the game winner during the 41st minute. A corner from fourth-year midfielder Parker Seymour (Toronto, ON) deflected to the feet of a waiting Douglas, who promptly rifled it into the open net from right in front of the net, a little inside the 18-yard box. The goal was Douglas' second on the season. It was a 1-0 game for nearly the entire match, until Western added another as extra time expired following the 90th minute. With the Gryphons in full-on attack mode, fourth-year midfielder Amad El-Houni (Toronto, ON) would set up teammate Stefan Rozek (London, ON) to give Western a 2-0 lead at the death.

Although the Gryphons were kept off the score sheet, they had several good scoring opportunities in the match. Leading the way for the Gryphons was fourth year midfielder Ethan Danielli (Guelph, ON). Danielli, provided tremendous service throughout the match, sending numerous balls to prime scoring positions for his teammates, who just weren't able to capitalize against the Mustangs. Western's fourth-year keeper Ben Cowman (Oshawa, ON) had a spectacular game for the Mustangs, turning aside all six shots Guelph put on target.

Western (4-6-4) sits 6th in the OUA West division, but still trail the Gryphons (6-5-2) who hold down 4th. The Gryphons will face another tough test in their next match when they play host to second-place McMaster (10-3-0) on Saturday, October 17 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 3:15pm.
