Guelph 1, Brock 1
Â
Guelph, Ont. (August 31, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphons and Brock Badgers men's soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday in their first meeting of the season in St. Catharine's. The Gryphons move to 1-0-1 on the season.
Â
The contest started slowly with neither team carving out any clear chances or sustaining possession for the first 15 minutes. The Gryphon attack was also slowed by injuries in the midfield, but the game burst into life in the 20th minute when
Ethan Danielli did well to set up forward
Jared Agyemang for a shot in the Brock box. Agyemang's shot was then defelected into the bottom corner of the Brock goal and past the keeper by
Timothy Flynn.Â
Guelph maintained possession and created five more chances on goal in the first half, and went into halftime comfortably in front by a goal.
In the second half, the Gryphons created several chances but could put none away. The defence meanwhile was stalwart in repelling the Brock attack. However things changed in the 72nd minute when the Badgers were awarded and successful on a penalty kick. The penalty kick was the only shot on target by Brock all day compared to Guelph's 13.Â
Â
Benjamin Caranci of Richmond Hill, Ont. finished with one save in the contest while Brock goaltender James Sweetzer had seven.
The Gryphons come away from the weekend feeling confident following the start of the season and have been led by the impressive play of rookie midfielder
Ryan Vyrostko, who has taken to the OUA game like a seasoned veteran.Â
Â
The Gryphons return to action next weekend when they play McMaster on Saturday (Sept. 6) in Hamilton at 3:15 p.m. and then the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.Â
