Gryphons fall to Laurier in OUA West Quarter-Final

Waterloo, Ont. (February 19, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs on Wednesday night following a 94-83 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks in an OUA West quarter-final in Waterloo.

The Gryphons ended their regular season with a 6-16 record. Guelph returned to the playoffs this season after failing to qualify for the playoffs last year. The Gryphons eliminated the Golden Hawks in the opening round of the playoffs two seasons ago in 2012.

Three players led the hot shooting of the Golden Hawks including Will Coulthard, Max Allin and Jack Simmons. Allin finished with a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds while Coulthard scored a game-high 28 points. Simmons added 21 points in the win for the Golden Hawks who shot an impressive 47 percent from the field.

Senior guard, Zachary Angus led the Gryphons with 21 points and five rebounds. Rookies Taylor Boers and Daniel Dooley dded 14 and 12 points respectively.

In what was a close game early on, the Hawks used a big second quarter to create some separation from the Gryphons on the scoreboard. Laurier dropped 30 points on Guelph in the second frame to take a 48-36 lead into half time.

The Hawks continued to score the ball in the second half, as they added 25 points in the third quarter before cruising to their first home playoff win since an 80-72 win over Guelph back in 2011.

With the victory, Laurier advances to the OUA West semifinals where they will face the No. 7 Windsor Lancers.
