Gryphons move to OUA semifinals after 1-0 win over Warriors

Box Score
Guelph 1, Waterloo 0

Waterloo, Ont. (February 15, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team will move on to the OUA Semifinals after their 1-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday afternoon at Columbia Ice Field. The Warriors have been eliminated from post-season.

This is the Gryphon's 14th win including the 12 straight to close out the regular season. It is also Stephanie Nehring's ninth shut out this season, including eight from the regular season.

It was a hard fought battle between the two evenly matched teams. The first period had both Gryphon goalie Stephanie Nehring and Warrior goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia, Ont.) guarding their nets from an onslaught of shots from both teams. The first period ended with a shots on goal total of 9-7, but remained scoreless.

It would be a lone goal from Averi Nooren at 4:16 in the second period that would win the game for Guelph. A pass from Kaitlyn Mora would set Nooren up for the backhanded shot that would put the score up to 1-0.

Nehring would end the game having turned away 17 shots on goal. The final shots on goal total for both teams were 24-17 in favour of the Gryphons, with a final score of 1-0.
