Gryphons guarantee themselves top 4 finish after 1-1 draw in London

London, Ont. – The Gryphons came into their match with Western on Saturday knowing that a tie or a win would put them in good shape to finish top four in the division this year.  However, a slow start by the Gryphons allowed Western to win possession easily at the top of the box and fire a shot past goalkeeper Benjamin Caranci (Richmond Hill, Ont.).  The team was shaken up in the 29' minute when three changes were made which steadied the ship, as the Gryphons went into halftime trailing only 1-0.  Guelph played like a different team in the second half and were much more effective in winning possession and creating chances.  The breakthrough for Guelph came in the 81' minute when forward Estevan Carles (Barrie, Ont.) was fouled in the box, giving Guelph the chance to tie the game from
the penalty spot.  Midfielder Tim Flynn (Scarbourough, Ont.) stepped up to take the spot kick and though it was saved, did well to bury the rebound and tie the game.  That led to a somewhat frantic final 10 minutes in which Guelph goalkeeper Ben Caranci made two great plays - one a save and the other as
he dove from his line to cut out a Western cross.  The game ended 1-1 and with Windsor's loss at York on Saturday, the Gryphons are guaranteed a spot in the top 4 and still have a chance to finish third.
