London, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons are learning that winning games in the very tight OUA West Division means 60 minute hockey. The young squad dropped a 5-2 decision to the Western Mustangs Friday night in London but not before having the lead. After scoring the first goal of the game the Gryphons surrendered four goals in the first period, and couldn't recover.
The Gryphons fall to 0-2-1 on the season while the Mustangs earned their first win of the season and sit with a 1-0-0 record.
Guelph opened the scoring in the first on a long pass and great shot by
Andres Kopstals (Toronto) set up by
Jordan Mock(Dartmouth, N.S.) and
Nicholas Trecapelli (Guelph). However, Western responded with four goals in the period by Reese, Cinamadore, Schwartz, and Ouellette.
Both teams traded goals in the second period with Ouellette getting his second for Western and
Carlos Amestoy (Toronto) with assists from
Kyle Neuber (Sarnia) and
Leonard Fabbri (Mississauga) replying for Guelph.
Despite having several excellent scoring chances in the third period for Guelph the score remained unchanged.
Keith Hamilton played in net for Guelph and Dodds went the distance for Western.
The Gryphons went 0-for-5 on the power play while Western was 2-for-4. The Mustangs outshot Guelph 39-21.
The Gryphons will return home to the Gryphon Centre Saturday (Oct. 11) in search of their first victory of the regular season when they host the Windsor Lancers Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. start.
