Guelph, Ont. (October 10, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team played the Algoma Thunderbirds at home Friday with a final score of 9-0. A total of six Gryphons contributed to the scoring, and the victory moves the Gryphons to 5-6-1 on the season.
Guelph dominated the play from the beginning, in part thanks to strong passing from
Elise De Decker (London, Ont.),
Courtney Whiteside (Guelph, Ont.), and
Bianca Ferlisi (Woodbridge, Ont.).
Breanna Hall (Kanata, Ont.) moved in to score the Gryphons' first goal off of teammate Whiteside's rebound in the sixth minute, taking an early lead. The offensive line kept the play in Algoma's end, setting Hall up to score a second goal in the 36th minute.
Danielle Canhoto (Georgetown, Ont.)and
Krista Lopoyda (Niagara Falls, Ont.) were close behind, scoring a goal in the 42nd and 43rd minutes respectively. The Gryphons finished the first half up by four with no shots on Guelph keeper
Elizabeth Brenneman (Baden, Otn.)
The Gryphons switched to more defensive play in the second half, utilizing the skills of starting defender
Nicole Brown-Shaw (Ajax, Ont.).
Kristina Strojin (St. Catharine's, Ont.) carried the ball up the field to turn the play in Guelph's favour, scoring two goals within 10 minutes.
Jacqueline Goulart (Mississauga, Ont.) followed her teammates' lead and scored two goals of her own in the second half. Halftime substitute
Meredith Langston (Aurora, Ont.) brought fresh energy to the second half, scoring a goal in the 83rd minute.
Algoma was short a player all game with no substitutions, but Guelph's effective passing and strong offensive plays contributed to the victory.
The Gryphons will face Algoma again tomorrow afternoon (October 11) with the game scheduled to begin at 3:15 pm at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.
