Guelph 2, Ryerson 1 - Shootout
Â
Toronto (January 25, 2014) –Â
Leigh Shilton scored in the shootout to lift the CIS No. 3 Gryphon women's hockey team over the Ryerson Rams 2-1 on Saturday night in Toronto.
Christine Grant scored in regulation for the Gryphons. The Gryphons move to 15-3-0 on the season.
Â
"It was a good team effort tonight," said Gryphon head coach Rachel Flanagan. "We controlled the play well. Ryerson did a good job of protecting in front of the net, not giving us many chances. Armstrong played very well for Ryerson. MacMacken came up with big saves for us in the shootout to secure the win."
The first period saw Guelph break open the scoring with a Christine Grant goal 7:44 into the frame, putting Guelph up 1-0. This was Grant's 10th goal of the season and she currently sits second in OUA scoring.
The Gryphons continued to put the pressure on but stellar defence by the Rams held them to a single goal going into the first intermission. The second period ended scoreless. At the end of 40 minutes, Guelph had fired 28 shots while Ryerson had mustered only seven but the score remained 1-0. The Rams opened up the third period on the power play and wasted no time capitalizing on their man advantage as Emily Popelar  put one through the five hole to tie the game at 1-1.
At the end of regulation, the game was still tied 1-1 and headed to five minute sudden death overtime.
With the score still knotted at ones, the teams prepared for a shootout to decide the fate of the game.
Both goalies denied the first four shooters, with Guelph'sÂ
Brittany McMacken playing outstanding in net. It was Guelph's Leigh Shilton that would end the shootout, puting one top shelf to put Guelph ahead 2-1. The Rams were unable to score on their final opportunity, as the Gryphons flooded the ice to celebrate the win.
Guelph fired 50 shots on goal and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Ryerson managed 16 shots and went 1-for-2 with the man advantage. Â
The Gryphons are back on the road tomorrow at Toronto for a 2:00 p.m. start.
