Gryphons blank Ridgebacks 5-0

The Guelph Gryphon men's soccer team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks on Wednesday night 5-0 in Oshawa. The Gryphons move to 1-0-1 on the season.

Robert Murphy scored two first half goals to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead going into the second half. Timothy Flynn  added a third goal before Ethan Danielli  cored from a penalty kick. Marc Bijman scored the fifth goal for the Gryphons. Niklas Wetterling was credited with the shutout for the Gryphons in his debut.
UOIT did their best to soak up the Guelph pressure for the first 15 minutes of the contest, but struggled to create any meaningful chances and when Guelph struck on 20 minutes, their resistance crumbled. A turnover at half created by midfielder Mike Bijman led to a quick counter-attack with Tim Flynn passing to Robbie Murphy to calmly finish past the UOIT keeper for Murphy's second of the season and 40th of his career.  For the rest of the half, Guelph dominated possession and produced several great chances, recording a total of 13 shots (7 on target) in the half. In the 43rd minute, Murphy added to the lead, again when Guelph stopped UOIT from getting the ball over half, this time assisted by Ethan Danielli.  Guelph continued their dominant display in the second half, with even more impressive stats - 10 corner kicks, 15 shots (10 on target) and 3 more goals. The first goal of the second half came again from great work by Mike Bijman and Ethan Danielli, with the goal deflecting into the net via Tim Flynn's back off a Danielli shot.
The Gryphons made several changes in the second half, but continued their dominance with late goals from Marc Bijman (82' corner-kick) and Danielli (88' penalty kick).  There were great performances put in by Danielli, Mike Bijman, and Drew Gowan who was tremendous out wide for Guelph.
From the rookie contingent great play was seen from Junior Roserie, Stephen Veenema, Jamie Wilcock, a debut for Zach Rushe, and goalkeeper Niklas Wetterling, who made three saves for the shutout in his first Gryphon game
The Gryphons host the York Lions on Saturday (Sept. 7) in Guelph at 3:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
