Womens Hockey Playoffs 2013 vs. Queens Gallery
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team fell 4-2 to the No. 7 Queens Gaels in Game 1 of the their OUA semifinal series on Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.
It's do or die for the Gryphons as they travel to Kingston for Game 2 on Friday (Feb. 22) at the Cataraqui Centre. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, is back at the Gryphon Centre on Sunday (Feb. 24) at 2:00 p.m.
The Gryphons outshot the Gaels 33-24 on the night but it wasn't enough to get the win. Christine Grant and Michelle Sabourin scored the Gryphon goals.
Stephanie Nehring turned aside 20-of-24 shots; while Melanie Dodd-Mohr earned the win for the Gaels making 31 saves.
After the first twenty minutes of play the Gaels led the Gryphons with a score of 1-0. Allie Biglieri (Toronto, ON) scored a rebound goal at 12:34,
with the helpers going to Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, AB) and Kristin Smith (Toronto, ON). The period was filled with end-to-end action, with the Gryphons outshooting the Gaels 8-7 in the period.
The second period was action packed with both teams refusing to back down. The Gaels scored early in the period (2:30) to make the score 2-0. Guelph native, Brittany McHaffie squeaked a five-hole goal past Gryphon netminder, Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) with assists from Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, ON) and Alisha Sealey (Elora,ON). The Gryphons responded however with a goal from rookie
Christine Grant (Mississauga, ON) at 6:18. Grant tipped the puck in as a rebound on
Kimberley Wong(Mississauga, ON) shot from the blue line, which came off a pass from
Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, ON). The period saw 13 shots from Guelph and 11 from Queens and ended with a score of 2-1.
The Gryphons put forth a good effort in the third period but came up short. Guelph opened the period's scoring, to tie the game, at 13:20 with a one-timer goal by
Michelle Sabourin (Pickering, ON) off of a pass from Parkins and
Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON). The Gaels quickly responded with a goal from the blue line that slipped past the screened Gryphons goaltender. The goal was scored by Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, ON) with assists from Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, ON) and Chantal Morais (Guelph, ON). At nearly the end of the game the Gaels tallied another goal as Morgan McHaffie scored with three minutes left off of an assist from her sister and line mate, Brittany McHaffie.
