London, Ont. - The Western Mustangs defeated the Guelph Gryphons 29-22 Saturday afternoon in an OUA Semi Final matchup in London.
With the win the Mustangs advance to the OUA Finals for the fifth consecutive season while the Gryphons will play McMaster for the OUA Bronze Medal next weekend.
There was fierce competition throughout the entire game with both teams fighting to advance to the Finals. Guelph scored their first try and conversion thirteen minutes into the game from
Joshua Morgan and the conversion from
Joe Newman Western quickly responded with three consecutive tries and two conversions to give the Mustangs a convincing lead. Before the end of the half the Gryphons scored a try from
Joshua Van Horne to close the gap, the Mustangs took a 19-12 halftime lead.
The Western squad held strong in the second half and quickly moved the ball up the field for two successive tries. The Gryphons answered with two more tries late in the game by
Nathaniel Stein and
Graeme Mahar but it wasn't enough, and the Mustangs walked away with a 29-22 victory.
The Gryphons will now host a OUA bronze medal game against McMaster next weekend. Game details are yet to be finalized. Please check gryphons.ca for up-to-date playoff information.
