Â
Guelph, Ont - The Guelph Gryphons will host their first playoff game of the year on October 26
th at Alumni Stadium against the Windsor Lancers who are seeded as the 6
th place team in the OUA standings.
Â
While the Gryphons finished the season third in the OUA standings, it was a close battle between the two teams when they last met in September. The Gryphons were able to put together a last second drive that had them in field goal range in the last minute of play. Guelph player Daniel Ferrero was able to put the ball between the uprights to win the game 24-23 against the Lancers. Since then the Gryphons have dominated their season, losing only to Queen's in the last week of regular season, ending with a 7-1 record. Meanwhile, the Lancers have put together a 4-4 winning record, but haven't won over the Gryphons since 2011 regular season.
Â
Over the course of the season, the Gryphons have put up only 252 points, which is not as much as Windsor's 269, but Guelph's defense has dominated throughout the season allowing only 135 points which is the lowest amount of points against any team all season. The Gryphon defense has been able to stop both the run game and dominate coverage throughout the season, with the defense being able to break through offensive lines to stop quarterbacks in their tracks.
Â
Last time the Gryphons met the Lancers the defense was able to put together a total of 10 sacks and 65 tackles in total, plus one interception for a 15-yard touchdown by Taylor Palmer. The Gryphon defense is ranked first in the OUA and has been difficult to get past throughout the entire season.
Â
Gryphon's quarterback Jazz Lindsey has a total of 1805 yards, 13 touchdowns and his longest pass was to receiver Carl Trivieri in Guelph's last home game against York. Guelph has a dominant run game that has been part of the driving force in their offense. The Gryphons have a total of 1251 rushing yards this season with 11 rushing touchdowns, coming in right after Windsor who has a total of 1400 rushing yards.
Â
Robert Farquharson has had an impressive season. After missing the first three games due to a hamstring injury, he was able to be the lead the offence in rushing yards with a total of 419 yards and 5 touchdowns, with an average of 6.55 yards per carry.
Â
The Gryphons are hoping to redeem themselves after their 37-23 loss at Queen's homecoming, which was their first of the 2013 season. The Gryphon's road through playoffs is longer this year as Guelph was able to get themselves a bye in the first round of playoffs last year, after coming out of an undefeated season, but were unable to beat the Marauders at the Yates Cup ending their season short with a final score of 13-20.
