Football stars honoured at Wildman Dinner

University of Guelph football players, coaches, parents and supporters gathered together on Saturday night to celebrate the season.  The Wildman dinner is an annual event celebrating the accomplishments and individual successes of the Gryphon football team.
 
Fifth-year wide receiver Jedd Gardner of Niagara Falls, Ont. was named as the team's 2011 Most Valuable player and the Wildman Trophy award recipient for excellence in athletics and academics. This season he became the all-time leading receiver in Gryphon football history with 2520 total yards and the all-time leader in receptions with 153. Gardner is a quiet leader who leads by example both on and off the field. Off the field he is an Academic All-Canadian and works as a Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) in the varsity sports study hall program. In practice and in the weight room Gardner sets the bar high with his strong work effort and his drive to be the best he can be. 

Rookie of the year honours went to defensive lineman Jordan Thompson from Burlington, Ont.  The first year played in all eight games and tallied 15 total tackles, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. 

Special teams player of the year was Bryan Dunjko of Aurora, Ont. who was also named as an OUA second team all-star this year.  The fourth year defensive back was an integral member of the defence tallying four interceptions, three breakups and also the special teams unit.

This year's captain award went to Kevin Campbell of Pickering, Ont.  This award is given out yearly to the athlete who has exemplified qualities of discipline and determination along with unwavering commitment to the football program throughout his career. The third-year wide receiver made 24 catches for 355 total yards and scored two touchdowns.

The Tom Dimitroff most outstanding defensive player of the year award went to linebacker and Guelph native Jake Reinhart  The fourth year defensive stalwart led the Gryphons with 62 total tackles this season.

Jakob Piotrowski of Shanty Bay, Ont. was named the lineman of the year.  The third year led his offensive line this season and played in seven of eight games for the Gryphons this season. Scout team player of the years went to first year Michael Ullerick of London, Ont. for the offence and Fraser Speakman of Sault Ste. Marie for the defence.

The 'Kyle Walters' award for the 'smartest' player who utilizes film, training and practice to be the most complete player went to fourth year defensive back Zachary Androschuk of Sarnia, Ont.
