The University of Guelph women's volleyball team fell to Queen's 3-1 tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-15, 23-25, 24-26 & 19-25.
The first set started well for the Gryphons as they jumped to an early 10-4 lead and expanded the lead later to take the set 25-15. Set 2 again saw Guelph leading early at 11-6 but Queen's closed the gap. The Gryphons forged ahead for a 3 point lead, but a 6 point Queen's run put them ahead to stay winning 25-23. Guelph appeared on their way to a third set win leading 20-11, but a streak of unforced errors allowed Queen's back into the game eventually stealing a 26-24 win. Queen's took an early 3 point lead early in set 4 and expanded it to 17-10. From there, Guelph closed to 20-17 but never closer dropping the set and the match at 25-19.
Coach Funk said, "We played at a better level tonight than we have in the past 2 matches. We had many good chances to score late in sets 2 & 3 but couldn't get kills when we needed them which swung the match in Queens' favor. I thought we had some players that played well and our libero
Kristen Almhjell (15 digs) was very good receiving and defending tonight."
Offensively, the Gryphons were led tonight by
Julie Gordon with 16 points (14 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) followed by
Taylor Crown with 9 (6 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks).
Guelph's home weekend continues tomorrow night at 6pm against the RMC Paladins.
