This afternoon (Nov. 10), Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, ON) led the Gryphon women's hockey team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Mustangs.
Â
The win propels the Gryphons to 7-2-2, while the Mustangs drop to 7-2-1 in the OUA standings.
Â
Lanzarotta tallied two goals this afternoon, including the game winner late in the third period, in today's win. Kate Mora (Guelph, ON) and Christine Grant (Mississauga, ON) pitched in with one goal each, while Brooke Siddall (Windsor, ON) was in net, making 15 saves.
Â
The Gryphons were first on the scoreboard when Kate Mora (Guelph, ON) and Tam Bell (Guelph, ON) combined while short handed, to lift the Gryphons to a 1-0 lead over their opponents. But, the Mustangs quickly fired back with a powerplay goal from Stacey Scott (London, ON) and Kryshanda Green (Caledon, ON) at 14:28, to even the score 1-1.
Â
The Mustangs came on strong in the second period, and took the lead when Scott fed Green a pass that hit the cross bar, and then fell in the back of the Gryphon net at 8:03. Â The Gryphons immediately went on the attack and were rewarded when Lanzoratta, with help from Bell and Gina Murray (Lucknow, ON), nabbed her first goal of the game on a powerplay, at 12:54 to tie the game back up, 2-2.
Â
A confident Gryphon team stormed onto the ice in the third period and wasted no time, taking the lead back once again. Grant scored at 2:09, assisted by Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON) to up the score to 3-2. Minutes later, Kendra Deller (London, ON) took the puck deep in the Gryphon zone, beating defenseman Victoria Formusa (Whitby, ON) and then eventually Siddall, to earn the equalizer for the Mustangs at 6:52.
Â
The third period began to intensify, but the Gryphons controlled the play and dominated the attack. With less than five minutes left in the game, Lanzoratta notched her second goal, assisted by Bell and Emily Corbett (Toronto), and the eventual game winner. The Mustangs made an effort to send the game into overtime, by adding an extra attacker with one minute left, but they could not breach a strong Gryphon defensive effort.
Â
In goal, Siddal collected 15 saves, while Kelly Campbell (St.Thomas, ON) collected 33 for the Mustangs. The Gryphons went 1/3 on the powerplay, while the Mustangs went 1/2.
Â
The Gryphons will host the Lancers tomorrow, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. in an effort to continue to climb the OUA standings.
