Gryphons advance to gold medal game at 2012 OUA Lacrosse Championships

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs will battle for the Patterson Cup on Sunday afternoon, after they posted wins in the semifinals of the 2012 OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship at Queen's University, Saturday.

Guelph advanced to the final with a 6-5 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks. Alyssa Nevills scored four goals for the Gryphons, who led 5-2 at halftime, while Dana Skyvington added the other two. Shelby O'Ryan scored two for the Hawks, while Jen Graham, Meg Austriaco and Sara Hatch added one.

Western punched their ticket to the final with a thrilling 15-10 win over the host Queen's Gaels. The Mustangs ran out to a 9-3 halftime lead, but Queen's fought back to tie the game at 10-10 with 15:40 to play. However, the Mustangs scored five unanswered goals to deny the hosts' hopes of an upset. Tawnie Johnson led Western with five goals, while Tenyka Snider scored three, and Michelle Farrugia and Tasha MacDonald each added a pair. Singles from Jesse Porter, Maddy Crowther and Becca Watson rounded out Western's scoring. For Queen's, Marsha Cryderman led with three goals, while Jen Farrow and Sarah Goldspink scored a pair. Singles by Murielle Landry and Teresa Mayo, along with an own goal, rounded out the Gaels scoring.

Four games are slated for Sunday, all at Tindall Field. At 8:30 a.m., York will face McMaster in the second consolation semi-final. The winner of that game will face Toronto at noon in the consolation final. The bronze medal match, between Laurier and the host Gaels, is set for 1:45 p.m. The OUA championship game, featuring Western and Guelph, is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
