Gryphon Men’s Soccer wins Overtime Thriller against Windsor

Senior Robert Murphy (Ottawa) scored two goals in the 103rd and 118th minute to lift the Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team to a 2-0 overtime victory against the Windsor Lancers in playoff actiontonight in Windsor.

After two halves of scoreless soccer, the Gryphons were able to find the goal twice in extra time to record the victory and move on to the OUA quarter-finals.  The number five seeded Gryphons will now play the number two seeded McMaster Marauders on Sunday in Hamilton.  In goal, senior Chad Paparoni (Burlington, Ont.) earned his third shutout in a row.

The first half was a very evenly contested affair with Windsor having more meaningful possession, and both teams creating decent chances, though none were clear goal-scoring chances.  Overall it was a relatively even first half with Windsor leading in possession, though no goals were scored bringing the score to a 0-0 halftime break.
The second half was a testament to the will and determination of the Guelph team, particularly the back line of Paul ManchisiNeil McLoughlinJeremy GaylorJustin Springer and goalkeeper Paparoni as Windsor led wave after wave of attacks into the Guelph half. However the Gryphons repelled every attack and were particularly excellent defending aerial balls and set pieces.
Windsor's best chance was a shot off the bar, while Guelph's Ethan Danielli also had a great chance to score, which was saved by the Windsor goalkeeper.  The Lancers continued to pile on the pressure, but the half ended 0-0, meaning extra time was on the cards.  Guelph came out very strong in the first extra 15min, and before long scored the goal that they had been working for. Jeremy Gaylor played a great long ball out from defence and captain Robbie Murphy burst through the Windsor back line before calmly slotting the ball past the onrushing Windsor goalkeeper.  This was Murphy's 37th goal as a Gryphon in only his 51st appearance.  At the beginning of the second 15, Windsor had a great chance to tie the game, but Paul Manchisi threw himself in front of two successive Windsor shots to preserve the lead, a symbol of Guelph's team commitment.  In the second 15, Windsor became more desperate and even sent the goalkeeper in for corner kicks, which would prove to be the cause of the second Gryphon goal.  A corner was cleared and Murphy won the ball from a Windsor defender; getting his head up quickly, Murphy realized the GK was out of his net and so Murphy passed the ball into the net from 40 yards out to take the score to 2-0.
