Gryphons tally pair of weekend wins

The Guelph Gryphon's women's lacrosse team went 2-0 this past weekend with wins over UOIT (12-2) and McMaster (10-4). The Gryphons finished the regular OUA season with a strong last weekend and an overall record of 9-2, placing them first in the East.

Saturday had the Gryphon's face division rival UOIT and come away with a solid 12-2 victory. The team jumped to a 6-0 head start and didn't look back. The team's success was highlighted by nine players contributing to goals and assists for the win. Defensively the Gryphon's continued to play as a strong cohesive unit holding the Ridgebacks to only two goals.

On Sunday, the Gryphons met the McMaster Marauders who have been gaining momentum throughout the 2012 season.  In their final game in regular season play the Gryphons came out strong and played a solid first half.  Captain Staci Morris (Brampton, Ont.) got the offensive movement started with an easy two goals.  Third-year middie Alyssa Nevills (Organgeville, Ont.) added the third and second year Katie Cartwright (Orangeville, Ont.) notched the four before Mac could answer with their first of the game.  Captain Katelynn Brzezinski (Orangeville, Ont.) helped to keep the defense unified and communicating which resulted in the Gryph's holding the Marauders to 6-1 at the half.

McMaster, determined to catch the Gryphon's came out of the gates and netted three quick unanswered goals.  After calling a time out and regrouping, the Gryphons game back strong and scored four unanswered goals of their own.  Communication was key defensively with the team only giving up four goals in total.  Control of the ball on the ground and in the midfield as well as a solid offensive effort resulted in a convincing win for the Gryphons. Netminder, and graduating player Linnaea Jasiuk (Orangeville, Ont.) came up big for the team making some outstanding saves throughout the weekend. Final score 10-4.

Teamwork and determination will be important as the team heads into OUA finals.
