Gryphons fall to undefeated Badgers

In their first game of the 2012 calendar year, the Guelph Gryphon women's basketball team dropped a 82-52 final to the undefeated No. 6 Brock Badgers on Wednesday night in St. Catharine's.

With the loss, the Gryphons are now 4-5 on the season while the Badgers move to 9-0.  

Sam Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) led the Gryphons with 11 points and nine rebounds while Ali Dzikowski (Brantford, Ont) and Dana Van Balkom (Hamilton, Ont.) chipped in with nine points apiece.

The Gyphons led 5-0, but the Badgers took the lead with a 13-1 run to end the first quarter. In the second the Badgers outscored their opponents 27-15, and they put the game away with a 16-0 run to start the third quarter.

The Badgers were led by junior forward Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who scored a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Senior guard Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) contributed with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. 

The Badgers up-tempo pressure defence had 18 steals and forced 26 Gryphons turnovers leading to 22 unanswered points. Brock also outrebounded Guelph 43-36. The Badgers got some great production off the bench with 39 points.

Brock shot 39.5% (32-for-81) from the field while holding the Gryphons to just 31.6% (18-for-57).

The Gryphons travel to Windsor this Saturday (Jan. 7) to take on the Windsor Lancers at 6:00 p.m
