The Guelph Gryphon men's basketball team dropped a close 77-74 final on Wednesday night to the Brock Badgers in St. Catharine's, Ont. in their first game of the 2012 calendar year.
With the loss the Gryphons drop to 5-4 on the season while the Badgers advance to 7-2.
The Gryphons were led by Kareem Malcolm with 21 points and Adam Bering with a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double digits was Jack Beatty who chipped in with 10 points in the loss.
Brock led by three at the half 37-34. The Badgers would go up by as many as nine points with one minute left in the third quarter (55-46), but Guelph would answer with a 10-2 run to end the quarter trailing 57-56 after thirty minutes.
Brock took a five point lead (61-56) early in the fourth quarter. Guelph would cut the lead back to one (61-60) with 7:53 left in regulation, but that was as close as they would come, as Brock put together an 8-3 run over the next four minutes on route to the three-point victory.
Brock had four players in double figures led by senior Andrew Kraus with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists. With his four assists he surpasses 300 in his university career.
For the game, Brock shot 50.0% from the field going 28-for-56. Guelph was 42.3% (30-for-71) from the floor. The Badgers dominated the glass outrebounding the Gryphons 43-23.
The Gryphons will continue their road stint this weekend traveling to Windsor to take on the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 8:00 p.m.
